My answer is an emphatic NO to the statement.
In this planet Man is the only thinking animal because he has a very well developed brain. His mind is full of variety of questions on what he observes. So he tries to explore around to find answers for his doubts. He also has a natural tendency to inquire into the realm of knowledge. He is curious to find out HOW and WHY of all the phenomena that is happening around him. Therefore he is able to establish supremacy over other forms of life.
Man is not only thinking all the time but also analyses the situation critically and weighs its pros and cons and formulates his own conclusions to perform better in all spheres of life. The process of thinking, analyzing, etc arises out of the fact that man is a very curious animal and that curiosity has helped him to progress and achieve in life.
Initially man’s writing tools were palm leaves and nail. He slowly ventured through paper and fountain pen, refill pen and now he is in the age of electronic Notepad. Man was sending message through pigeons. He established postal system of communication involving letters, telegraphs, speed post etc. He went on to evolve satellite communication system.
Man has progressed in all the spheres of life. He has evolved better technology than yesterday and the day before to make life enjoyable on this planet. We owe all our progress to scientific, creative, and lateral thinking of Man that has lead to research in various branches of knowledge. After all, life without imagination is meaningless.
Now we are living in the period when Man is trying to conquer Nature. Man’s growth and progress would not have been possible without his rational thinking for doing perfect research. Research means to search again. Research is defined as search for knowledge with an open mind to establish novel facts. Research is a critical enquiry into facts for principles of life.
To conduct research one has to adapt certain scientific methodologies to get meaningful results. Scientific method is a general problem solving method for all Domains including our personal lives and is unbiased. Thus it is a creative suite for problem solving and decision making. Scientific Method involves the following stages –viz. 1.Observation and Description of the problem, 2.Collection and analysis of data. 3. Formulation of Hypothesis.4. Test of hypothesis 5. Drawing conclusions.
On the basis of the above method several problems were tackled by me during my teaching career in school. Every class room is a laboratory. Teachers are the research scientists. The various students with varieties of problems are the data.
My observation was that students who were not eating balanced and nutritious breakfast were not able to perform well in the examinations and tests. The class was divided into two batches. To one batch balanced food was provided and to the other batch balanced food was not provided. Then the lessons were taught together for both the batches. At the end of the week test was conducted. Students who ate breakfast did better than the students who did not eat. Then all students were instructed to eat healthy breakfast before the school begins.
In another instance my students were losing foot ball matches to the opponent school. Out of three games each school was winning one each. The last one was the deciding game. My students were playing very well but somehow they were not able to clinch the trophy. This was a common problem for several times. On queries were raised, all students said that towards the end of the game they started becoming uncomfortable in their dress and they were not able to hit the winning goal. Our school students were wearing Navy Blue T shirts and opponents were wearing Bright Yellow T shirts. Foot ball matches are played in the afternoon under scorching sun. I understood that the Navy Blue T shirts were denying them the trophy. When all students were asked whether they are feeling very hot and sweating inside their dress. All of them confirmed. Going by the principle” Dark colors absorb heat” , the color of T shirt was changed to White. The very next match was own.
In all our walks of life there is a lot of scope for research. Inquiry and Investigation will always improve the standard of living and the quality of life.
