Greta Oto
Tropical rain forests house these rare butterfly species. They are able to survive in the jungle because they have evolved the transparent wings to hide from their predators. The wings of the butterfly have invisible patches thus giving the rare butterfly its name Glasswing Butterfly. The wings help them to blend with their habitat and go unnoticed especially while they are feeding.
This butterfly with transparent wings is very rare and very beautiful, as delicate as finely blown glass. The insect looks like a painting on the stained glass window. The transparent wings of this beautiful insect  shine in the sunlight like polished panes of turquise, orange, green, and red.
The wings of other species of Butterflies have coloured scales. This variety  lacks the coloured scales because the tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass.  The opaque borders of its wings are dark brown in colour , sometimes tinted with red or orange, and its body is dark in color.
They feed in the Aster flowers, the lantana species, as they are attracted to the scent and the nectar. The female adults lay their eggs in the genus Cestrum, in the family of Solanaceae. They belong to warm temperate to tropical regions of  America, like Mexico,Panama, Chile. Genus Cestrum has 150-200 species of flowering plants. They are grown as ornamental plants in those regions. The caterpillar stage of the Transparent Butterfly feeds on the leaves of these Cestrum Species.
Rainforests region which is a home of these rare insects is a trasury of forest resources. Rainforests region houses rich biodiversity of plants, insects and animals. They also provide rich resources for human beings such as timber, food and medicine. Many medicinals plants are growing in wilderness and  are of immense value to human beings. Now, south American rain forestes are disappearing at an alarming rate. So this has a devastating effect on these rare insects. They are dying out because the rain forests are being destroyed due to urbanisation and commercialisation.  In another few years the entire family of 250 species may be wiped out. But this should not happen.
We have to undertake sustainable forest management techniques like replanting or leaving an area to regrow after cutting. There should be regular monitoring of the effects of our actions on the wild life and environment.
We need our rainforests and if we damage or destry them we are damaging and harming our children’s future. We should work in harmony with nature. We are beginning to learn the cause and effect of destroying and disturbing the nature. So it is necessary that we ensure that our environment is kept in proper balance to protect these tiny, but beautiful insects from endangerment and extinction.
