We, Indians worship Elephant God but we are inhuman to Elephants. We are using them for carrying heavy loads. We are hunting them and over powering them for entertaining us in Zoo and other stage shows like circus and cinemas.
It is hunted and killed for ivory, the tusk, is in very large demand and promises the owner with riches. Is killing the Elephant for ivory correct?
The droppings of Elephants are nutrient-rich manure that replenishes the depleted soil and it is a vehicle for seed dispersal. Some seeds will not germinate unless they have passed through an elephant's digestive system. The Dung Beetle reproduces in the Elephant’s dung.
Elephants dig water holes and pull down trees. Many animals and man depend on these water holes and the trees that are pulled.
Elephants are contributing for our economy and ecology. But the Asian elephant population is shrinking. The number of elephants in Asia is 35000 to 40000 as compared to 2 lakh in the year 2000.
The reasons are many. Elephants require 250 kgs of food and 200 liters of water every day. Their habitat has shrunk because man has converted their forest into cropland, grown timber for fuel, which is a step towards urbanization.
Man is not friendly with the elephants. Whenever food supply or water is insufficient in forest the elephants come in group to plunder the sugarcane fields of the adjoining village. So the local people shoot and kill them because they see the elephants as some pests.
The Govt should set up Elephant Parks in many places around India for these mighty animals and should treat them kindly. By doing this we have restored their homes. Though we are not able to provide a similar home like their own we have the satisfaction of providing them foster homes for this ecologically important animal. Govt should also setup cloning clinic for Elephants to increase the population.
